The Hole, Brooklyn, NY

The Hole is a secluded, five-block area straddling the border between Brooklyn and Queens in New York City. Characterized by its low-lying terrain—approximately 30 feet below the surrounding areas—this neighborhood is prone to flooding, with streets often submerged and littered with abandoned vehicles and trailers. The area is colloquially known as the "Jewel Streets," with thoroughfares named Ruby Street, Amber Street, and Emerald Street. (oddstops.com)

In the 1970s and 1980s, the Hole gained notoriety as a clandestine burial site for the Gambino crime family. The isolated nature of the area made it an ideal location for disposing of bodies and discarded stolen goods. Notably, in 1981, the bodies of Bonanno crime family capos Alphonse "Sonny Red" Indelicato, Dominick "Big Trin" Trinchera, and Philip "Philly Lucky" Giaccone were buried there after being murdered by associates of the Bonanno family. Their remains were discovered in 1981 and 2004, respectively. (oddstops.com)

The neighborhood's desolate appearance, with its flooded streets and abandoned structures, has led to comparisons with post-apocalyptic settings. Despite its grim history, the Hole remains a quiet residential area, with its past largely forgotten by the general public. However, it continues to attract interest from those fascinated by New York City's organized crime history. (newsweek.com)
