About this place

Discover Bagley Wood

Situated in the parish of Kennington, Oxfordshire, this ancient woodland spans approximately 550 acres and is renowned for its rich biodiversity and historical significance. Traversed by the A34 road, which was rerouted through the wood in 1972, it offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue.

Historical Significance

The wood's history dates back to 955 AD when it was granted to Abingdon Abbey by King Eadred. Following the dissolution of the monasteries, it became part of the estate of St John's College, Oxford, in 1557. Over the centuries, the wood has been a site of various activities, including timber production and research. In 2020, a fire believed to have been started by a barbecue destroyed a building within the wood, leading to plans for its replacement. (oxfordmail.co.uk)

Ecological Diversity

The wood is a mosaic of natural oak and coppiced woodland, plantations, experimental plots, and specimen trees. It is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, and features carpets of bluebells in April and May. The wood is open to permissive public access on maintained routes via gated entrances, allowing visitors to explore its diverse habitats. (centurywood.uk)
