St Laurence Church

St Laurence Church, situated in the heart of Northfield, Birmingham, is a Grade I listed building that stands as a testament to the city's rich historical and architectural heritage. Dating back to the 12th century, it is one of only four remaining medieval churches within Birmingham, offering a unique glimpse into the past. (nationalchurchestrust.org)

Historical Background

The origins of St Laurence Church can be traced back to the Domesday Book of 1086, which mentions a priest in "Nordfeld," indicating the presence of a church prior to the Norman construction. This suggests that the site has been a center of Christian worship for over a millennium. (birmingham.gov.uk)

The current structure, primarily built between the 12th and 15th centuries, reflects the architectural evolution of the period. The church was originally controlled from the Priory of St. James in Dudley, highlighting its significance within the medieval ecclesiastical hierarchy. (en.wikipedia.org)

Architectural Features

St Laurence Church showcases some of the finest Early English work in the historic county of Warwickshire. The most significant Norman feature is the round-arched doorway, dating from around 1170, recognized as the oldest extant architectural element in the city. (en.wikipedia.org)

The church's exterior is adorned with a 14th-century timber porch, a rare example of its kind, and a 15th-century barge-board porch, adding to its architectural diversity. The north aisle, added in 1900 by architect George Frederick Bodley, complements the original design, blending Gothic Revival elements with the existing structure. (birminghamheritage.org.uk)

The church tower features a gridiron, symbolizing the martyrdom of St. Laurence, adding a distinctive touch to its silhouette. (en.wikipedia.org)

Interior Highlights

Inside, the church boasts magnificent stained glass windows by Hardman & Co., renowned for their intricate designs and vibrant colors. These windows depict various biblical scenes, including the Passion of Christ, the Resurrection, and the Nativity, offering a visual narrative of Christian history. (en.wikipedia.org)

The church also houses a Lady Chapel dedicated in the South Aisle and a chapel dedicated to St. Laurence in the North Aisle, providing spaces for reflection and prayer. (en.wikipedia.org)

War Graves

The churchyard contains war graves from both World Wars, serving as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made. The churchyard extension, which lies between Kings Norton and Bristol Road, contains war graves of sixteen service personnel, one of World War I and fifteen of World War II. (en.wikipedia.org)

Community and Services

St Laurence Church has been a focal point for the community, with educational initiatives dating back to 1714. The St. Laurence Church schools were founded by Dr. William Worth, Rector of Northfield, and are considered the oldest church schools in Birmingham. The school started with just six boys who had lessons in the porch of the church, later expanding to 12 boys having lessons in the vestry. In 1820, a school room was hired, and in 1837, a purpose-built school on Church Hill was opened. The schools continued to expand, and by the 1960s, it needed to use the Northfield Institute building to house some of its classes. The headmaster Rev E.A. Penny oversaw the school's move to their current site in 1964 for the Junior School, followed in 1972 for the Infant School. (stlrnci.bham.sch.uk)
