About this place

Discover Al Safa Mosque (Mosquée Al Safa)

Situated in the heart of Tangier, this mosque stands as a testament to the city's rich and diverse history. Its origins trace back to the 5th century CE, when a Roman temple occupied the site. Following the Arab conquest in the 8th century, the structure was transformed into a mosque, reflecting the Islamic influence that permeated the region. Over the centuries, it has undergone several reconversions: during the Portuguese and British dominations in the 15th century, it was repurposed as a church, only to be restored as a mosque in 1684 by Sultan Moulay Ismail. The definitive reconstruction in 1815 under Sultan Suleiman gave it the magnificent appearance visitors can see today. (barcelo.com)

Architecturally, the mosque is a rectangular building measuring 34 meters in length and 30 meters in width. Its main entrance is centrally located on the northeast side, opposite the mihrab on the southeast wall. Inside, the mosque features a prayer hall and an interior courtyard, which includes a fountain for ritual ablutions. The minaret, situated at the northeast corner, has a square base approximately 4 meters on each side. The upper part of the minaret is adorned with a decorative battlement, followed by a shaft topped with a pyramid-shaped dome with metallic finishing. (barcelo.com)

The mosque's walls are predominantly covered in white stucco, with green and orange ceramic tiles in geometric patterns accentuating the doors and parts of the minaret. The roof is adorned with green ceramic tiles, adding to its aesthetic appeal. (barcelo.com)

While non-Muslim visitors are not permitted to enter the mosque, the exterior offers a glimpse into its architectural beauty and historical significance. Its location in the Medina quarter, close to the Petit Socco, makes it a notable landmark in Tangier. The mosque's rich history and architectural features reflect the city's diverse cultural and religious heritage. (barcelo.com)
